Parabens in Skin Care Products Tied To Infertility in Men
A new study suggests that unregulated chemicals in everyday items such as toothpaste, soap, skin lotions and deodorants may be leading to fertility problems in men. Parabens such as methylparaben and propylparaben are preservatives widely used in many skin care, cosmetic and grooming products in the U.S. and around the world. While they are generally effective as a preservative, they are used because they are very inexpensive compared with more natural alternatives. To examine the effects of these chemicals on fertility, researchers in Poland looked at test results on 315 make fertility clinic patients. they found that those with higher concentrations of parabens in their blood, urine, saliva and semen had lower testosterone levels and a larger proportion of abnormally-shaped or slow-moving sperm--factors that can dramatically reduce fertility. Additionally, parabens were linked with DNA damage in sperm. While no conclusions were drawn as to why parabens affected fertility, or at what level they can become harmful, researchers urged caution to avoid these chemicals. Parabens are wide spread in many products. The best way to avoid parabens in your skin care products is to check the ingredients on the label. South Beach Skin Solutions does not use any parabens in its products. A recent article on by Nathan Gray discusses how the use of cosmetics containing butylparaben during pregnancy may be linked to an increased risk of children becoming obese, according to new research.
